Introductory, Standard and Advanced, Refresher/Recertification Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Training to Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3

What is Ultrasonic Testing?

Ultrasonic methods of NDT use beams of mechanical waves (vibrations) of short wavelength and high-frequency, transmitted from a small probe and detected by the same or other probes. Such mechanical waves can travel large distances in fine-grain metal, in the form of a divergent wave with progressive attenuation.

The technique detects internal, hidden discontinuities that may be deep below the surface. Transducers and coupling wedges are available to generate waves of several types, including longitudinal, shear and surface waves. Applications range from thickness measurements of thin steel plate to internal testing of large turbine rotors.

Ultrasonic testing techniques are widely accepted for quality control and materials testing in many industries, including power generation, production of steel, aluminium and titanium, fabrication, aerospace and marine.

Courses available

IMechE Engineering Training Solutions offer a comprehensive range of Ultrasonic Testing training courses in Levels 1, 2 and 3 in a range of central and employer specific internationally recognised standards such as PCN (BS EN ISO 9712), SNT-TC-1A, EN4179 and NAS410.

We are also able to offer refresher training to those students that are looking to re-certify, providing training on any theory or practical areas that may need to be revisited before sitting their examination.

Courses are delivered at the Engineering Training Centre in Sheffield, UK but can also be completed on-site at an organisation's premises or third party location depending on each individual circumstance.

Richard Horsfall - Trainer, Examiner and Level 3 Consultant

Richard is our lead Advanced UT tutor having joined IMechE ETS in 2013 and has 10 years of standard and advanced NDT teaching experience.

Before training tomorrow's NDT specialists, Richard gained experience within the rail and transport industries as a Senior Turbine Specialist with Alstom.
