What is Eddy Current Testing?

Eddy current testing (sometimes referred to as 'Electromagnetic testing') provides a means of surface and within variable limits sub-surface flaw detection capabilities. Eddy current testing can be used on any electrically conductive material with its major advantage of being capable of flaw detection through both conductive and non-conductive coatings.

Examples of industrial sectors where eddy current testing is carried out are Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Aerospace and Formula 1.

In eddy current inspection, a magnetic field is produced by an alternating current flowing through the test coil. When the energised coil is brought close to, or placed in contact with, a conductive material, eddy currents are induced in the material. This produces a magnetic field that opposes the field produced by the coil. The net effect is to cause a change in the impedance of the test coil and change can be detected with a high degree of accuracy by the instrument circuits. A change in test coil impedance can be caused by discontinuities such as cracks but also material properties, coil factors and probe handling.

The objective a course will not only be how to identify and categorise discontinuities but to ascertain the the exact cause for change i.e.  to eliminate those factors which are not of interest.
 

Courses available

IMechE Engineering Training Solutions offer Eddy Current Testing (Welds) NDT training courses in Levels 1, 2 and 3 in a range of central and employer specific internationally recognised standards such as PCN (BS EN ISO 9712), SNT-TC-1A, EN4179 and NAS410.

Developed alongside industry leading equipment developers Eddyfi, we have developed the Pulsed Eddy Current Appreciation training course. Students will be able to train on the new Lyft system whilst gaining a overview on using Pulsed Eddy Current to combat Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI). 

We are also able to offer refresher training to those students that are looking to re-certify, providing training on any theory or practical areas that may need to be revisited before sitting their examination.

Courses are delivered at the Engineering Training Centre in Sheffield, UK but can also be completed on-site at an organisation's premises or third party location depending on each individual circumstance.

Having gained experience within aerospace and fabrication industries, Howard joined IMechE ETS in 2013.

Howard is also leading our Pulsed Eddy Current training course having spent time with Eddyfi at their head office in Quebec, Canada focusing on their Lyft system.
